SUMMARY:Be the Spark Training
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Be the Spark! \nParticipants can expect an opportunity to learn\, reflect\, connect\, and build  community and movement organizing skills. .You will leave with a practical toolkit for public advocacy\, with a blueprint for inviting people to take concrete action on the issues that matter to you\, and with a framework and narrative for movement building towards justice and liberation. \nThe work of building a more just and sustainable world is collective work – no one person or organization can change the world alone. We are part of a movement of people who care passionately about this world and the people who live in it. Our ability to influence change at the Capitol\, help our neighbors transition into more sustainable energy\, and repair the harms of centuries of greed and extraction is dependent on people like you and your willingness to organize your friends\, neighbors\, and communities to live differently in this world. \nBe the Spark offers training and conversation that will help you grow your capacity to organize\, build your skills through connection with other passionate people\, and help you inspire others into climate justice work. In each session\, you’ll get tools and practices that will help you inspire your people\, focus your purpose\, and identify tangible actions for successes you can celebrate. \n\nFacilitated by Liz Loeb (MNIPL Associate Director) and Buff Grace (MNIPL Director of Faith Networks)\nDinner\, coffee\, and snacks provided\n\nInterested in attending? Please consider making a gift to support this free event! Click here to make a donation.  \nCLICK HERE TO RSVP!

SUMMARY:Quarterly Community Offering - Summer 2025
DESCRIPTION:Through the year and beyond\, we’ll be hosting Quarterly Movement Offerings\, which will be an opportunity to share what we’re working on and hear from you what you’re paying most attention to. SUMMARY:Sun Day: Day of Action
DESCRIPTION:Sun Day is a nationwide day of action on September 21\, 2025\, celebrating solar and wind power\, and the movement to leave fossil fuels behind. We all know that clean energy is the only way. Solar energy is now the cheapest source of power on the planet – and gives us a chance to actually do something about the climate crisis. But fossil fuel billionaires are doing everything they can to shut it down. We will build\, rally\, sing\, and come together in the communities that we need to get laws changed and work done. \nHere in Minnesota\, the Twin Cities’ Sun Day festival will feature inspiring music\, theatrical performances\, interactive activities\, and exhibits\, where the “solar-curious” (including families) can have fun while also exploring options for their own participation in the clean-energy revolution.  \nWe’re very excited to be holding the festival at Graco Park\, Minneapolis’ newest park\,  located on the Mississippi River in NE Minneapolis\, with nearby parking\, bus lines\, and bike and walking paths. The festival will be one of the park’s first big events. It’s an ideal location for a Sun Day festival. The park has a net-zero building with a solar array\, geothermal\, and hundreds of native plants.  \nCLICK HERE TO RSVP! \nThe Twin Cities’ Sun Day is hosted by COPAL (Communities Organizing Latine Power and Action)\, the Sierra Club North Star Chapter\, MNIPL (Minnesota Interfaith Power and Light)\, and Third Act Minnesota. Many other organizations will also be participating.  \nBill McKibben\, founder of Third Act and Sun Day\, wrote an excellent guest essay for the New York Times where he lifts up the importance of acting collectively to keep advancing a clean energy future. Join us in acting collectively at the Sun Day Festival in September!  \nCLICK HERE TO RSVP!

SUMMARY:Community Climate Resilience Hubs – October Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Throughout this year\, MNIPL is inviting people like you to join our Community Climate Resilience Network (CCRN) to engage communities across the state in a training series that shares the best practices about how to create resilient communities. \nJoin us on October 21 to learn about ways to strengthen your facility and energy systems for improved resilience. Learn about solar electricity and battery backup as well as the ways your building systems can be supported and upgraded to face weather disruptions.   \nSolar Electricity: Federal support for solar energy systems will change dramatically in 2026\, but you can take steps yet in 2025 to retain thousands in federal funding. \nBattery Storage:  Paired with rooftop solar\, battery storage can supply some or all of your electrical needs in times of power outages.  Cecelia Hartigan\, an electrical engineer with Apadana Energy\, will join us to talk about this technology and what you should consider when considering battery storage. \nBuilding Resilience:  Jeremy Davis of Minify Energy will join us to address building envelope issues and other internal needs such as heating and air systems when planning for resilience in the face of weather disruptions. \nCLICK HERE TO RSVP FOR THE OCTOBER SESSION!

SUMMARY:The More They Build\, The More They Make: How Utilities Plan for Profit
DESCRIPTION:Utility companies make money when they build energy infrastructure. The cost of that infrastructure is passed on to customers through rate hikes – like the 13% rate increase Xcel is proposing right now.  How can we tell if what utilities propose are the things that best serve our pocketbooks and communities?  \nJoin us for a webinar to learn more about the way utilities are incentivized to build infrastructure and how that affects our rates. We will also be joined by Brian Edstrom\, Senior Regulatory Advocate for the Citizens Utility Board\, to discuss the current Xcel Rate Case that is open for public comment through the end of the year. \nCLICK HERE TO RSVP!

SUMMARY:Why Are Our Electric Utilities Structured Like This?
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever wondered how the electric utility industry works? Or why its financing\, business practices\, technologies\, resources\, and regulatory structures look the way they do in various places around the country? The history of utilities in the United States is filled with controversy and compromise. Understanding that history can reveal what’s possible for political action today at the local\, state\, or federal level. \nJoin MNIPL and Ben Kodres-O’Brien\, who will share his insights about the industry’s history—and how that history could or could not inform efforts of policymakers\, activists\, and other changemakers in Minnesota and beyond. \nBen is a PhD Candidate at Columbia University. His dissertation examines the history and political economy of the electric utility industry\, and how past policies have affected and been limited by the diverse mix of technologies and generating resources in use within the United States. \nCLICK HERE TO RSVP!

SUMMARY:MNIPL Winter Book Club: Here Comes the Sun
DESCRIPTION:This winter\, MNIPL is launching a Winter Book Club to read inspiring works speaking to this moment in our collective climate crisis. If you’ve been wondering how to access hope for your continued work on climate action\, these books are for you! Please join us! \nEvery month January – March\, we’ll read a recent book to learn about innovative approaches to addressing climate change and to discuss how these ideas could work in our local context. \nHere Comes the Sun tells the story of the sudden spike in power from the sun and wind-and the desperate fight of the fossil fuel industry and their politicians to hold this new power at bay. From the everyday citizens who installed solar panels equal to a third of Pakistan’s electric grid in a year to the world’s sixth-largest economy-California-nearly halving its use of natural gas in the last two years\, Bill McKibben traces the arrival of plentiful\, inexpensive solar energy. \nWe will talk about our reactions to the book and the ways we can speed up this already stunning revolution.\n\nNo time to read? Here are a few of my favorite conversations about central ideas in the book:  \n\nBill’s interview with Lisa Smith on Big Bend Radio (26 minutes)\nLengthier discussion on his book tour with Adirondack Explorer (1 hour 16 minutes)\nBig Ideas Radio (11 minutes)\n\nPurchase here or from your favorite book purveyor.  \nRSVP HERE!!
