Less Gas, More Giving

We know the price to gas up our vehicles is more than just what we pay at the pump. Our reliance on petroleum products has and continues to cost us our environment, health, and quality of life in our communities.

In 2011, a group of people from the Community of St. Martin agreed to face these true costs head on and voluntarily pay more per gallon of gasoline in the form of a “gas tax.” They undertook this public, symbolic act as a way to counter the negative impacts of oil addiction, change personal habits, and increase use of sustainable transportation alternatives.

Since the program began, the group has generated more than $35,000 from their voluntary gas tax. They’ve donated these funds primarily to organizations that advocate for clean transportation and political change around the climate crisis.

At our September webinar, come hear from members of the St. Martin gas tax group as they share details, lessons, and tips for how other communities could start similar programs.

MNIPL’s Community Connector webinars are for everyone! On the 1st Tuesday of each month, we deepen into a different topic related to climate justice. Through shared learning and conversation, we hope you can feel more confident and empowered to help grow the climate movement. Whether it’s with a community of faith or spiritual practice, neighborhood group, circle of friends, etc., we are all community connectors!

NOTE:  This webinar has been moved to the 2nd Tuesday in September in recognition of Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year), which begins at sundown on 9/6 and concludes at nightfall on 9/8.
